Job Title: Disciplinary Alternative Educational Placement (D.A.E.P) Assistant
Exemption Status: Nonexempt/At-Will
Reports to: Principal
Pay Grade: D3

Calendar Days: 187

 

Primary Purpose:
This position is responsible for assisting students assigned to the D.A.E.P. in tutorial activities as well as in providing educational support to assigned teaching staff. This position works with students at risk of academic failure. The D.A.E.P. assistants are assigned to the Disciplinary Alternative Educational Placement Campus composed of students from the middle schools and high schools in the district who attend the Center for a period of 6 weeks or more due to student discipline problems occurring at the home campus.


Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
Have met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning*
Texas instructional aide certificate (TOPP)

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic computer operations and skills
Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
Ability to assist with enrichment activities for students
Ability to work cooperatively with district families
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively
Trained in Crisis Prevention and Intervention techniques
Trained in recognizing the signs of substance abuse
Trained in Boystown social skills intervention
Ability to use crisis prevention and intervention techniques as needed

 

Experience:
Some experience working with children


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Student Management
1. Provide instruction to students under the direction of teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
2. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
3. Performs bus and breakfast duty.
4. Assists students on and off buses.
5. Supervises students at meal time.
6. Supervises and accompanies students to the restroom.
7. Accompanies and supervises students with movement throughout the school and campus.
8. Assists teacher with bulletin boards, decorating room, and preparing student work.
9. Assists teacher with grading and record keeping.
10. Assists teacher in tracking discipline and/or behavioral charts and records.
11. Assists in contacting parents.

12. Maintain confidentiality.
13. Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as needed.
14. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
15. Performs other job-related duties as may be assigned by the campus principal or designee.

None.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping
Motion: Moderate walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside; may occasionally work outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress


*Required by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for aides who are providing instructional support in Title I, Part A program.
